This section will provide general answers to the emissions questions you may have and what to expect when you arrive for an emission test.

The test fee is $20.00 . If you are late for your test, dmv may impose a late fee when you go to reregister your vehicle which is payed to dmv. We at Murray Brothers Garage do not charge you any late fees.

When the test is performed the results are electronically filed with dmv at the completion of the test.

When you arrive you will be asked for the letter that the state sent you informing you that you need an emissions test. (don't worry if you don't have the letter, the test can still be performed). You will be given a pamphlet that discusses why you need an emissions test and the rights you have involving the test. Next the vehicle will be brought into our emissions test bay and tested and depending on the year and type of vehicle the test should take approximately 10 to 20 minutes to complete. After the test is completed you will be given a test report which will inform you if your vehicle has passed or failed. If the vehicle has passed there is nothing else you have to do but pay the $20.00 test fee and have a wonderful day.

If your vehicle failed, you will have 30 days to make repairs and get a free retest at our shop. The repairs can be made anywhere or even by you the customer, but if you need to apply for a waiver then the repairs made to your vehicle must be done by a certified emissions repair facility, which we at Murray Brothers Garage are fully qualified to do if you choose us to make the repairs. As a side note, please try to have the repair form completely filled out by whom ever did the repairs.

There Are 3 types of emissions tests depending on the year and type of vehicle you  have.

1) The OBD test which is the most common test. This test is performed by simply plugging in a test lead to your vehicles on board computer and scanning for any trouble
codes which may be present. Generally if you check engine light is not on you will pass this test although there are a few exceptions. This test is performed on most vehicles 1996 and newer excluding certain trucks and generally takes 10 to 15 minutes.

2) The Dyno test. This test involves strapping the car to a dynameters which simulates a vehicle driving down the road. There is a test probe put in the tail pipe which measures how much pollution is coming from the vehicle while the vehicle is being driven on the dynameters. This type of test is generally done on 2 wheel drive vehicles 1995 and older and take from 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

3) The 2 speed idle test. This test is performed by placing the test probe in the tail pipe of the vehicle and then the vehicle is set to idle at which point the test station will take a reading then the vehicle will have its rpm raised at which point the test station will take another reading and determine if the vehicle passes or fails.  This test in performed on most all wheel drive vehicle 1995 and older and trucks with a gvw over 8500lbs. This test takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
